Art is an important aspect of learning in early childhood education and must be carefully designed to enhance their artistic development and nurture an appreciation for beauty in their world. Art enriches the lives of all preschoolers and toddlers as it provides experiences for them in finding meaning about themselves and the world around them.

“From the moment the child discovers what it looks like and feels like to put lines down on paper, he has found something he will never lose, he has found art” – R.Kellogg1969.

Rhoda Kellogg has studied 100,000 young children’s drawings drawn with pencil, pen, crayon or brush and this extensive study has helped significantly in our understanding of children’s artistic development. She was particularly interested in the scribbles of young children and she discovered that children progress from making scribbles to drawing pictures by using a built-in, spontaneous method of self-teaching and would continue until the children were 5 years old and only in the later stages of development that children’s artwork can be coached and guided by an adult.

Kellogg also identified various symbols that have been drawn by children across various cultures. The mandala design which is a simple circle or square divided by intersecting lines is produced by children in different parts of the world.

Kellogg also discovered that preschoolers and toddlers unlike older children are not concerned about their art pieces looking nice or resembling real things but they move their hands to express a feeling that comes from within them and are delighted in the movement and scribbles they produce. With this knowledge in mind, it is important not to force them to look at physical objects and try to copy it but allow them to experiment, create in their own unique way thus providing them an opportunity to express their own ideas and feelings.

The artistic developmental stages are the scribble stage, basic form stage and the pictorial stage. Although there is a predictable pattern to their development, preschoolers and toddlers move through the levels in different ways and at their own pace. These stages can assist parents or teachers as they work with young children and provide guidelines for planning for a specific group of children.

Kellogg’s developmental stages

Scribble stage
These are the earliest drawings of young children. They are simple and random markings, made for the pleasure of drawing scribbles. During this stage, the young children have no concern in trying to draw to represent anything but rather are enjoying the process of making scribbles on the paper.

Basic form stage
Children begin to draw simple lines and shapes. Kellogg identified several universal symbols that children use around the world. These include the mandala, sun, ladders, spirals, wavy lines and rainbows. These symbols were being used to communicate and were the beginnings of writing. Children in this stage continue to draw for pleasure.

Pictorial stage
During this stage, children use the shapes from stage 2 to draw symbolic representations of real people and things such as houses, tress and windows. They begin to identify their drawings, tell related stories and expand their drawings to include new meanings and understanding.

Positive and appropriate nurture of preschoolers and toddlers beginning artistic efforts can provide a strong foundation for later development and enjoyment of artistic experiences.

Effective communication is one of the most important life skills anyone can have. There are many people who have excellent academic qualifications but if they have not learnt how to express themselves in a creative and interesting way, will lose out in many ways to others who do not equal their academic qualifications but have learnt how to communicate effectively through spoken language and how to co-operate and build positive interpersonal relationships with others.

Parents can provide opportunities for their preschoolers and toddlers to become effective communicators when they understand the different types of oral communication. Listening and speaking are the basis for language development and are as important as completing their written activities or perfecting neat handwriting.

Provide an environment to encourage them to express themselves.
Effective communication is when parents learn how to allow their children to express their own thoughts and ideas freely. Have a warm and supportive home environment where they can learn to express themselves without the fear of criticism or judgment. Help them understand that making mistakes is a necessary and an expected part of learning.

Set aside some time to listen to your preschoolers and toddlers.
Listen empathically by encouraging them to explain and defend their viewpoints while at the same time listening to yours. Parents should try not to interrupt while they are speaking or finish off their sentences for them. Be patient with them as they might take a little longer to express their thoughts as they are still learning to put them into words and interrupting them will not help but will impede fluency and make them less confident.

Parents can forge close bonding with them by reading their favorite story books or watching movies together. Encourage them to express their own thoughts, feelings or viewpoints on the characters in the stories or movies by asking them open-ended questions. Show them that you value their individual differences of thought and opinion and encourage them to be original and creative in self-expression.

Organize activities for your preschoolers and toddlers that will invite them to explore and manipulate ideas and think “out of the box”.
Have gardening, drawing or cooking activities together to provide them interesting life experiences as this can help to broaden their vocabulary and the more diverse these experiences are, the wider their vocabulary will become for them to be able to express themselves accurately and succinctly.

Encourage them to describe things accurately.
When they answer your question with an “okay’ or “all right”, ask them what they mean by that. Do they mean “funny’, “entertaining” or “interesting”? Using precise words is important for accurate and unambiguous communication.

Develop strong reporting skills by allowing your preschoolers and toddlers to tell you about their present and past experiences. Encourage them to reflect on these experiences by asking them to describe how they felt or how would they have reacted if it happens again and compare them with other experiences they have had.

Reasoning skill is another important oral skill for them to inculcate. Training them on how to explain processes, articulate problems and suggesting solutions and opinions can kick-start their creative thinking to come up with a whole range of brilliant and imaginative ideas. Using their imagination is one way of thinking that leads to having great ideas.

Preschoolers and toddlers need time, opportunity and encouragement to develop these life skills and they learn best by ‘having a go” when they have nothing to fear or be anxious about and all their intelligence and creativity is employed to the full. This is the natural way to learn.

Memory Brain Games
These games challenge their memory, concentration and observation skills.
Place a few picture cards and let the kids remember the cards for a period of time. Close the cards and ask them to remember the picture cards. The number of cards and the time will depend on the ability level of the kids. Another extension of this game is to take away one card and ask them which picture card is missing.

Visual brain teasers for kids
These games develop visualization skill. Depending on the ability of the kids, have a puzzle set of 10 to 20 pieces. Take out several pieces and ask the kids to fit in the missing pieces.
Another classical game is to spot the differences between 2 identical pictures but several items are missing from one of the pictures.

Sensory learning games
These games develop their sensory and imaginary skills.
This game develops their sense of touch. Show several toys to the kids. Let them touch, hold and explore the toys. It is best when the toys have different shapes and textures like smooth, rough, furry and leathery surfaces. Put the toys in a cloth bag.
The kids have to put their hand inside the bag to guess what the toy is by feeling it. Encourage them to describe what they are touching.
Another great game to improve their sense of sight is to describe an item in a room and ask the kids to find it.

Language brain teasers for kids
These games develop literacy skills as the kids need to think about and manipulate words and letters.
Write the kids names on the board and ask them to create words using the letters in their names. An example, Sara, John and Peter – the kids can create words like ran, hen, near or tear. Another fun game to practice spelling and vocabulary skills is playing the classical crossword puzzle. The kids will get fulfillment when they are guided initially so that they understand what they have to do to fill up the empty grid boxes.

Logic brain teasers for kids
Riddles develop problem-solving skills as it trains the kids to see how making relationships between bits of information can help them solution-find and they engage the kids in a great deal of thinking activity.

When kids receive stimulation through positive interactions with caring adults during their early years, connections between neurons and synapses are formed as they learn and when appropriate brain teasers for kids are used, they are given the opportunity to develop their thinking and use their ability to question and reason when they learn and all these are important features of great thinkers.

Decorating preschoolers and toddlers bedroom is not as easy as it seems. Parents have to think of the safety features and blend them with childlike fantasy. They need separate areas for sleeping, playing and studying.

A typical bedroom will have a bed, study table and storage for their toys. Their room decoration need to be less expensive and easily changeable as their needs change rapidly, so here are some ideas for an economical cost decoration.

Preschoolers and toddlers love primary colors like red, blue, green and yellow. However, it is not a good idea to paint the walls or furniture in these colors as their tastes are ever-changing, so the wise choice is to keep these in neutral color.
Other than painting their walls, have some fun decorating with them. Stick pieces of colored paper or some cartoons from the magazines or stickers. They are not expensive and can be changed easily. You can change them every week thus giving it a fresh change of environment.
You can also hang posters on themes like motivation quotes, science or even their favorite cartoon characters. These are some preschoolers and toddlers activities which you can do with them as they are fun, engaging, get them involved and stimulate their creativity.

Consider putting in a colorful area rug. These rugs come in all sizes, so take them shopping and allow them to choose their own rug and complement it by throwing in several hug pillows to create a cozy corner. They will love to snuggle down for reading or play some games. You can even add a bookshelf next to it to give a purpose to the place by putting in their story books, magazines and toys.

Decorative shelving is another brilliant way to add charm to rooms. You can either buy simple, plain and inexpensive shelves. Engage in other fun preschoolers and toddlers activities by making the shelves yourself. Buy a plywood shelf and paint them in their favorite color and decorate them with stickers, pictures from magazines or hanging toys.

Storage in their rooms must be made accessible to them. You can buy carts with rollers and place them under their beds or if you have shelves, store the less frequently used items on top.

Kids love inflatable furniture. It comes in different colors and designs and easily stored away when they are not needed.

Kids love to write on walls, so it is a good idea to hang a large black board on the wall at their level. This will prevent them from writing on the wall and also present a prop for them to play imaginary games like “Pretend to be the Teacher”. Preschoolers and toddlers love imaginative plays and an activity much encouraged during the early years as such plays contribute to happiness, self-confidence, development of cognitive, emotional, social, creative and physical skills.

There are many ideas for decorating kids rooms and it need not be expensive but the key to a good decoration is that it is flexible enough to change and adapt to their rapid changing needs.

With this busy lifestyle, where then can quality time with the family fits? Is it an impossible mission? No, so please put down whatever you are doing and spare a minute to read this.

Even though both husband and wife work, they have to find time to strengthen their bond with their kids as often as they can. We must never resort to lame reasons like feeling too tired or too busy and neglect the family that you have created.

Quality time is where family members gather to share special moments to nurture their relationship and it can involve many activities to let each other know you are a family. Such activities need not always be outdoors as there are many kid activities you can do together in the house such as play board or card games or watching your favorite movies. Kids need to know and feel that they have parents who love and care for them to enjoy their childhood and grow up to be confident adults.

How do you have quality time with your kids?

When a family is committed to managing their lives well to raise a happy family, you have to make time to spend time with the family no matter how busy your daily schedule is or how tired you feel. This is a basic and important requirement to spending quality time with your kids. You can try the suggested kid activities which you can do with them –

Have a morning or evening walk in the park
Learn to relax with your kids by having a leisurely 30 minutes walk in the park. You need not do this every day but have this activity at least once a week as the main purpose is for the family to be together. I like to pack a simple picnic lunch during the weekends and take my whole family out to the park.

Have regular “sit down” meals together
Sharing a “sit down” meal together on a regular basis can do wonders for your family. Schedule two or three nights in a week for this special meal and give your kids undivided attention. Show them how interested you are in what they have been doing for the day or at school by listening emphatically to them. Kids are very sensitive as they know when you are genuine or just faking it, so turn off your cell phones and television and do not read the newspapers or magazines when you are having this “sit down” meals with them. I see so many parents doing this and they wonder why their kids are still not happy when they thought that they have already spent quality time with them.

Have a fun activity night together
Schedule a day to play some activities with the family. Take turns letting each family member choose the activities that will be played. I will usually plan this activity with my family a month before as this can build up the excitement in my kids. The activities which we usually play are board games such as Monopoly, Risk and Scrabble. I still remember fondly one of the most enjoyable and fun kid activities which my youngest child organized for a particular month. It was the Easter month and she had diligently collected several empty egg shells for us to paint Easter eggs. Later she hid these eggs and gave us clues to find the hidden eggs. My whole family loved this activity so much that we promised to play it again next year and even name it as “The Easter Hunt”.

Read to your kids or encourage them to read to you
This is one of the many kid activities which I encourage parents to start early with them, as early as while they are still infants. They may not understand all that you are reading but they will grow to love the sound of your voice. Choose storybooks with big prints and colorful pictures to read to your kids and it is always good to encourage them to read to you as this can nurture them to love reading.

Knowing how to spend quality time with your kids is like baking a cake, a lovely, time-consuming process that should not be hurried or it will a leave a nasty taste in everyone’s mouth – why? try eating a half-baked cake!

Education systems may be mass produced but every child is different and unique in their own ways. There will be children with different levels of abilities and interests. Some like to sit quietly, contented listening to stories being told while there are others who love to tell their own stories.

When they are doing their preschool activities be it in Math or English lessons, they need to work off their irrepressible energy.

Children are eager to show their teachers or their parents what they already know and can contribute. I have a girl aged 5 years old in my daycare center who likes to do her own thing. We were doing a project on creating a recipe book but this girl was different from the rest of the class in that she did not follow what was written on the board but she asked for some old magazines from the teacher, and copied the pictures of food and drinks as pictures meant more to her than the few rows of words.

Children usually like to take initiative in their work when they are given the opportunity and guidance to do so but sadly this does not happen very often in many classrooms. We should not stifle their creativity but provide them the right environment to work in, encouraging them to believe in their own gifts and the confidence to pursue them in the way they thought best.

In my classes, I would always have preschool activities which encourage them to express their ideas in pictures or in words through art projects like paper mache, dancing or singing. We cannot expect them to sit quietly and write lines of words which will not make them any more creative.

Children can learn to be responsible when they are given the opportunity to discover their own gifts and talents and take charge of their own learning for their future. Their development as individuals is more complete when they take charge of themselves and what they learn so that they can create and develop their own system of learning that is unique to them, a style which works for them. One of my favorite preschool activities which I love to do with the children is to keep asking them questions while I am narrating a story to them, especially when they are open-ended questions where there is no one correct answer, for example “Where does the sun hide at night?” This is one of the strategies which we use to train children to be brilliant and to develop their creative thinking.
When children can identify with what they are doing and learning, they are more than willing to participate and give you their full attention and they can stay focused in preschool activities that they are interested in and when they are deeply involved, they will learn best.

We cannot develop creativity in children by demanding them to complete pages of homework that they may find boring but instead give them plenty of opportunities to use and explore their creativity by encouraging them to create their own homework which they feel is important which can make their learning more effective.

Children handle boredom differently, one might keep quiet while another might be more vocal by letting everyone know how bored he is, and so we must learn to accept their differences with positive expectations so that they are made aware of their own strengths to develop their own individual gifts and talents.

The individual ability of every child is limitless and with the appropriate support, encouragement and guidance they will learn how to develop an effective and flexible learning strategy that works for them, develop independent thinking skills and their own creativity.

Most kids have difficulty learning the difference between right and left and to develop a sense of navigation or spatial skill is one of the important concepts of math. Kids with well developed spatial skills are very creative, dramatic, artistic and musical.

There are many fun kids math games developing such spatial skill which I enjoy playing with the kids at my center but the games described below are some of my favorites.

Beautiful colors

You can help your kids differentiate between right and left by using colors. Kids usually know the names of basic colors like red, blue, green and yellow before they learn direction as colors are something which they can see and easily associate with things around them. Tie colored ribbon around their wrists, for example, tie yellow on the right wrist and green on the left. Then you ask them to raise their right hand, the yellow one or the left hand, the green one. This is one of the many simple and fun kids math games which will help them to connect or associate the color with the correct direction.

Playing traffic policeman

Kids have boundless energy and they never seem to be able to sit still. I would usually play this game during their break time where I will have one kid pretending to be a traffic policeman. She will wear a blue glove on the right hand and a red glove on the left hand. She will be directing traffic as to where each kid will be sitting at their table for their break. When I say this kid goes to the right, she will have to raise her right hand with the blue glove and similarly with the left hand. The kids cannot wait for their turn to play this game which is one of the many kids math games which we play to help them to learn the concept of direction.

Bowling game

You would need a ball and some empty plastic bottles. Line up the bottles in a row like bowling pins and let the kid use the ball to hit the bottles from varying distances. They must listen carefully to know which hand they must use to roll the ball and if they use the wrong hand their scores will be subtracted. I would usually play this game as a competition to see which group can bowl down the most bottles to make it more fun and exciting. This is one of the excellent kids math games which we play at the center as it not only help to develop their coordination and navigation skills but also on their counting and arithmetic skills such as addition and subtraction as I would involve the kids on how to keep a scorecard by learning to count the number of bottles which fell, adding or subtracting the scores to decide which group is the winner.

Kids gain a great sense of accomplishment when they learn to do things with their hands and playing these kids math games helps them to refine their motor skills at they involve the small muscle movements of their hands and fingers in coordination with their eyes and also require dexterity, precision and manipulative skills.

Kindergarten learning is the period of life where they learning to develop their motor skills, cognitive thinking, social skills, creativity and it is very important to ensure that they are having fun and enjoying themselves.

During this period, they love to play and creating games which are fun are most effective for learning.

Pretend play

Pretend to use an imaginary object and have the children guess what you are doing. You can pretend to hammer a nail, water plants, cook, swim or drink a glass of water. Reverse roles where you guess while the children pretend. This game never fails to delight them but do not look down on this classic and simple game as it fosters many benefits as it can develop communication skills, cognitive thinking, observation skills, creativity and imagination.

Open-Ended Questions

Ask children open-ended questions during their kindergarten learning as such questions can stimulate learning by encouraging them to think and discover on their own. Suggested open-ended questions are such -

How would you describe…?

How would you design this schoolbag to make it more comfortable to use?

How does this work?

Why did you pick that?

Why do you need to drink milk?

Who would you like to be when you grow up?

What does a cotton ball feels like?

What would happen when you can combine pretend play with open-ended questions? Awesome and “FUNtastic” kindergarten learning!

Baby, Story time!
When you read stories to your children regularly you are encouraging them to be good readers and you can promote pretending to read by providing them opportunities, such as reading to their baby dolls. Children who pretend to read in their kindergarten years are more likely to become successful readers.
Set up the scene in their bedroom and place their favorite dolls, stuffed animals on the bed. Give your child books with big prints and colorful pictures, play lullaby music to set the mood and encourage them to read to their favorite dolls and although they are not really reading, they feel like readers when they pretend to read.
After the story telling has ended, ask them open-ended questions like -
How does your baby feel when you …….? Or
what can you do to make them feel happier?
This game can be played at their kindergarten but you can also bring this kindergarten learning to your home as the props are easy to set up, very safe, a single player game and can release you well needed time to do your own work.

Vet, Vet, Help! My pet is sick!
When children are given opportunities to answer questions, their communication skills and as they become more active in questioning and answering, their understanding of the language will increase.
Set up props to make your play area look like a veterinarian’s office. Make signs like “We are Open”, “Opening Hours”, or something humorous like “No toys please, we only treat real animals”. Encourage the children to think creatively for more of such signage to be hung around.
Prepare slips of paper for them to “register” their pets – name, type, age of pet and allergies to any food. Have children pretending to be the receptionist, veterinarian and the customer.
Roll the camera, start and action!
After the session is over, ask them open-ended questions like -
How can you tell if your pet is sick or happy?
What did you do to help it feel more comfortable?

There are endless creative pretend games which you can create for fun and effective kindergarten learning such as playing detective, doctor or firefighter. When you provide props to enrich the environment, unique literacy experiences are enhanced that encourages children’s creativity, stimulate more ideas to bring into play and capturing their interest as they learn to read and write and have fun at the same time. Fun learning is effective learning!

Songs, poems and finger plays are some of the preschoolers activities that promote pre-reading skills. These activities help them to strengthen their vocabulary, develop memory capacity, hear syllables, gain phonological awareness, learn auditory discrimination, play with rhyming, understand sequencing and hear the rhythm and flow of language.

You can engage a little twist to singing songs. Play any familiar songs but sing each syllable backwards, for example, “Baa, baa black sheep, have you any wool” become “Aab, Aab kcalb peehs, evah uoy yna loow”. When the preschoolers hear the familiar melody, they will recognize the song and the preschoolers find them humorous as they are sung in a funny manner giving them laughter and enjoyment.

Songs, poems and finger plays are great preschoolers activities as they can instill a love of words and language.

Creating books has many benefits;

Train them to become readers and writers

Learn to apply the literacy concepts

Learn to associate oral language with written language

learn how to sequence events

Compose their own stories and write at their own levels

Motivate them to develop their writing skills at higher levels

Help them to gain confidence to believe that they are great readers and writers

When preschoolers are given the opportunity to create their own books foster an environment of excitement and enthusiasm encouraging them to keep and re-read their own books. Creating books is one of many special and meaningful preschoolers activities for pre-reading skills.

Dramatic play allows preschoolers to explore oral and written language. Ideas and concepts which they have learned and familiar with are no longer abstract and arbitrary but become real when they engage in dramatic plays. When they are surrounded by an enriched literacy environment, learning becomes natural as they can practice, experiment and explore oral and written language.

During dramatic play, props are usually used for their many benefits -

To stimulate ideas

To learn to interact by encouraging them to communicate their needs and ideas to peers

To provide unique literacy experiences that develops their creativity

To expose them to print from real-life situations and use these prints in meaningful ways. Suggested ideas are creating a scene from a doctor’s office where you have a receptionist writing down the particulars of patients using sign-in sheets or a scene from a restaurant with waiters or waitresses writing the orders from customers using order pads.

Dramatic plays are very fun preschoolers activities which provide the opportunities to discover literacy concepts in a natural environment or setting.

Laughter is a powerful tool in childhood education for its many benefits -

Develops good social skills – laughter helps to break the ice and creates bonds between people

Develops pre-reading skills – kids love poems and nursery rhymes for their rhyming words or nonsense syllables

Develops creativity – when kids are given the opportunities to do silly or funny things such as walking backwards or walk and quack like a duck instill in them a sense of humor which has long-term benefits such as they are encouraged or allowed to stretch their imagination, think outside the box and expose them to look at situations from different perspectives.

Develops cognitive thinking – among the areas of cognitive thinking are intelligence, reasoning, language development and memory. Laughter can increase learning and retention as both sides of the brain are stimulated and when kids are enjoying themselves while learning tend to learn and retain more of what is being taught.

Below are several funny for kids’ animal games which will make your kids roar with laughter.

Five Mischievous Monkeys
You can finger play while reading this short story.
One mischievous monkey eats banana (pretend to peel banana)
Two mischievous monkeys walk like crabs (walk sideways)
Three mischievous monkeys sing like ducks (quack and flap your arms)
Four mischievous monkeys dance like ballerinas ( raise arms and toes and circle round)
Five mischievous monkeys sleep all day (put your hands against cheek and snore)

Three little Pigs
Encourage the kids to act out the story as they are read and to make this funnier for kids, show them how to do the actions in slow motion and the movements must be in tandem with the reading. This game develops the kids in many skills such as body awareness, cognitive thinking, creative movement, emotions, listening, observation, reading, coordination and socializing. This is a group game and is great for parties too.
Once upon a time, there were three little pigs.
The first little pig built his house with straw
The second little pig built his house with sticks.
The third little pig built his house with bricks.
One day, a big bad wolf came to the straw house.
“Little pig, little pig, can I come in?” he said.
“No, by the hair on my chin I won’t let you in”, said the first little pig.
“Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down,” said the big bad wolf. (To make this even more funny for kids, encourage them to think creatively how to act silly while huffing and puffing)
And he huffed, and he puffed and he blew the house down.
The big bad wolf came to the stick house.
“Little pig, little pig, can I come in?” he said.
“No, by the hair on my chin I won’t let you in”, said the second little pig.
“Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down,” said the big bad wolf.
And he huffed, and he puffed and he blew the house down.
The big bad wolf came to the brick house.
“Little pig, little pig, can I come in?” he said.
“No, by the hair on my chin I won’t let you in”, said the third little pig.
“Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down,” said the big bad wolf.
So he huffed, and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed, but he couldn’t blow the house down.
So the big bad wolf climbed on to the roof and came down the chimney…..
Splash! That was the end of the big bad wolf.
